The cottage

Once a working stable on a quiet Northumberland holding, Snooty Fox Cottage has been carefully converted into a single-storey bolthole for two — and one well-loved dog.

The open-plan living space is the heart of the cottage. Karndean flooring underfoot, granite worktops in the kitchen, and a woodburner that takes the chill off even the wettest Tyne Valley afternoon. French doors open onto a private, fully enclosed garden — perfect for morning coffee, summer suppers, or a quick spaniel runaround.

The bedroom is set up with a super-king zip-and-link that can split into twins if you prefer, with a generous ensuite that has both a bath and a separate walk-in shower. Everything you need is on one level, no awkward stairs, no fuss.

Hexham & Hadrian's Wall

The market town of Hexham is just a mile and a half away — independent shops, a Friday market that has been running for centuries, the well-regarded Queen's Hall theatre, and more pubs and restaurants than a long weekend can fit in.

You're in the heart of Hadrian's Wall country. Walk the Roman fort at Vindolanda, climb up to Sycamore Gap, or follow the path from Steel Rigg in either direction. Newcastle and the coast are a 20-minute drive when the city beckons.

Right from the door

The cottage sits within a stone's throw of Hexham Racecourse, with race days a short stroll away in season. The country lanes around the holding are quiet and roll gently through farmland — easy walking, good cycling.

Bring boots. Bring the dog. There are footpaths in every direction and a couple of nearby pubs that will happily pour you a pint at the end of one.

Cosy autumn hideaway

The woodburner became the heart of our stay — log delivery sorted, kitchen had everything we needed, and the garden looked beautiful with the leaves turning. Perfect base for walks along Hadrian's Wall.

Better than the photos

We booked direct after staying once via an agency, and we're so glad we did. The single-level layout suited my parents perfectly, and our spaniel adored the enclosed garden. Will be back.

Quiet, comfortable, immaculate

Absolutely spotless on arrival, with a thoughtful welcome pack. The bed was firm and incredibly comfortable. Hexham is a 5-minute drive — lovely shops and a brilliant Friday market.

A proper countryside retreat

Frost on the fields in the morning, woodburner going by 4pm, and a short drive to a great pub. The cottage is warmer than ours at home. Owners were helpful and easy to deal with.
